Observed Ocean Surface Winds and Mixed Layer Currents Under Tropical Cyclones: Asymmetric Characteristics
نویسندگان
چکیده
Tropical cyclones (TC) transfer kinetic energy to the upper ocean and thus accelerate mixed layer (OML) currents. However, quantitative link between near-surface currents high wind speeds, under extreme weather conditions, remains poorly understood. In this study, we use multi-mission satellites drifting-buoy observations investigate connections TC surface winds currents, including their spatial distribution characteristics. Observed ageostrophic current speeds in OML increase linearly with (for range 20–50 m/s). The ratios of are found vary quadrants. particular, mean ratio is around 2% left-front left-rear quadrants relatively small variability, compared 4% right-front right-rear quadrants, much higher variations. Surface both exhibit strong asymmetric features, largest on right side. eyewall region Hurricane Igor, (e.g., about 47 m/s) induce (about 2 directional rotations resonant dependent location within storm. متن کاملThe air-sea interface and surface stress under tropical cyclones
Tropical cyclone track prediction is steadily improving, while storm intensity prediction has seen little progress in the last quarter century. Important physics are not yet well understood and implemented in tropical cyclone forecast models. Missing and unresolved physics, especially at the air-sea interface, are among the factors limiting storm predictions. In a laboratory experiment and coor...
متن کاملTropical cyclone footprint in the ocean mixed layer observed by Argo in the Northwest Pacific
This study systematically investigated the ocean mixed layer responses to tropical cyclone (TC) using available Argo profiles during the period of 1998–2011 in the northwest Pacific. Results reveal that isothermal layer (IL) deepening and isothermal layer (IL) cooling with evident rightward biases induced by strong TCs are clearer compared to the weak TCs. Likewise, the rightward biases of IL d...
متن کاملEffect of surface waves on Charnock coefficient under tropical cyclones
[1] The dependence of the air-sea momentum flux on surface wave fields is investigated at very high winds under tropical cyclones. A coupled wave-wind model is applied to estimate the momentum flux under ten hurricanes in the western Atlantic Ocean during 1998–2003. The model explicitly calculates the wave-induced stress vector and the total wind stress vector from a given wind speed vector and...
متن کاملStratified coastal ocean interactions with tropical cyclones
Hurricane-intensity forecast improvements currently lag the progress achieved for hurricane tracks. Integrated ocean observations and simulations during hurricane Irene (2011) reveal that the wind-forced two-layer circulation of the stratified coastal ocean, and resultant shear-induced mixing, led to significant and rapid ahead-of-eye-centre cooling (at least 6 °C and up to 11 °C) over a wide s...
